Southwest General Hospital to Offer New Stroke Support Group

Beginning January 2019, Southwest General Hospital will offer a new monthly support group for stroke survivors, their families and caregivers. The Stroke Support Group will meet on the third Thursday of every month.

Stroke survivors, their families and caregivers can RSVP by calling 1 (877) 215-9355, or by visiting and selecting ‘Events and Classes’ from the main menu.

“Our mission is to provide education, encouragement, hope and understanding for stroke survivors through a fun and welcoming support group that meets right in the heart of our community,” says Craig Desmond, CEO, Southwest General Hospital.

Each month, guest speakers will present educational sessions related to stroke recovery in an environment that supports interaction between individuals facing similar challenges.

According to the American Stroke Association, “Social interaction and simply feeling connected to others helps ease the depression and isolation so common after stroke.” Numerous studies have validated the importance of social support following a stroke. By attending a stroke support group, patients have a unique opportunity to engage in emotional and social healing, which can be as important as physical healing for overall quality of life.

Southwest General Hospital’s new Stroke Support Group is the latest development in a streak of concentrated efforts toward supporting stroke patients in San Antonio. In May 2018, Southwest General Hospital received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, which recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

“Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S.,” says Craig Desmond. “It is our aim to serve the survivors and those who are invested in their recovery by striving for the highest quality care and by developing new resources like our Stroke Support Group.”

Southwest General Hospital’s Stroke Support Group is free and open to the public.
